Dividing Your Personal Property During Divorce

For most couples, splitting up jointly owned possessions for equitable division is a big part of the process of getting divorced and the question of who takes what becomes an important consideration that must be addressed.

The first step in dividing assets during a divorce is to create a complete financial picture of all the property owned by each spouse. Commissioning an independent inventory and valuation of your possessions is an important part of this process and can help save time and money on legal costs.

Coram James provide inventories and valuations of individually and jointly owned possessions for the purposes of divorce proceedings and equitable division. Our detailed reports list art, antiques, jewellery as well as general house contents such as electrical items and modern furniture and furnishings. Our inventory and valuation documents include a detailed description and photograph of each item and its location within the property.

We also act as Single Joint Expert (SJE) and work closely with solicitors in the preparation of divorce reports which comply with Part 25 of the Family Procedure Rules 2010. It is frequently the case where the parties cannot agree on the value of a personal asset such as jewellery, an art collection or antiques, that a single joint expert is instructed. Coram James has considerable experience providing inventories and valuations for matrimonial division and our divorce valuations can be used to help couples divide possessions fairly.

Coram James is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors(RICS) and is an affiliate member of Resolution.
